香港大學舍堂歷史

香港大學最出名必定是其舍堂傳統(Hall culture)。舍堂的歷史可以追溯至HKU開校之初 — 1912年。

現時HKU總共有十六間舍堂,其中有十三間為可住宿的舍堂(residential)提供共3,764宿位HKU的所有本科生,交流生及部份研究生,餘下的為非住宿舍堂(non-residential)。 各舍堂各有不同特色,但最簡單的分類方法是 — 以Hall 的年期為分 即「傳統Hall」 及「非傳統Hall」。 「傳統Hall」 及 非傳統Hall」 並沒有一個正統的定義,究竟間Hall 有廿年歷史定廿五年歷史才稱為「傳統Hall」 ? 為免起爭議,本人的分法以1969/70 年大學評議會廢除所有本科生均需入住舍堂為界,原因另文再述。所以Ricci Hall, Lady Ho Tung Hall, St. John’s College, University Hall 及Morrison Hall 均為傳統的residential Hall,而Swire Hall, Simon K.Y. Lee, Lee Hysan Hall, R.C. Lee Hall, Wei Lun Hall, Starr Hall, Lee Shau Kee Hall , Suen Chi Sun Hall 均為非傳統的residential Hall。而由於Lee Shau Kee Hall , Suen Chi Sun Hall 及Morrison Hall 均為HKU入面最新的舍堂,所以它們亦稱為「新Hall」。

另外,十六間舍堂中有數舍堂為單一性別舍堂,純男residential Hall : Ricci Hall, University Hall , Morrison Hall (只限本科生, undergraduates only)。純女residential Hall : Lady Ho Tung Hall。其餘的均為男女子宿舍(co-ed residential hall),除Lee Hysan Hall外,所有男女子宿舍均男女分層。而Duchess of Kent Hall 為純女non-residential Hall, Hornell Hall為純男non-residential Hall 而Lee Chi Hung Hall為男女non-residential Hall

除了上述兩種分法外,另一種分法以與main campus 的距離遠近為分,在main campus 入面有Swire Hall 及Simon K.Y. Lee,在campus 外的有,由近至遠,薄扶林道91號的賽馬會第一舍堂村(Lady Ho Tung Hall, Starr Hall 及Ho Tim Hall), 薄扶林道93號的Ricci Hall,薄扶林道82號的St. John’s College,薄扶林道109號的賽馬會第二舍堂村(Lee Shau Kee Hall , Suen Chi Sun Hall Morrison Hall),沙宣道6號的沙宣道舍堂村(Lee Hysan Hall, R.C. Lee Hall, Wei Lun Hall, Madame S.H. Ho Residence),薄扶林道144號的University Hall。

St. John’s Hall founded by Church Missionary Society on the site of the present St. Paul’s College, Bonham Road

University Hall (located in Main Building) later renamed Lugard Hall

Lugard Hall (originally named University Hall) opens.

The first University-managed Hall: demolished 1992
